When is online renewal an option?
The online route has additional conditions beyond general renewal eligibility. Your home and mailing addresses must be in Canada, and you must be there to receive the passport. The current passport must expire within six months or already be expired, and you must not be travelling within the next 20 business days.
This is only a summary. Check every condition on the official page, including the passport’s validity, identity details and condition. Your existing passport is cancelled when you apply online. Follow the government’s delivery and travel guidance before choosing this route.

When should I look at PPTC 054?
PPTC 054 is the adult simplified renewal form for eligible applicants using the Canada or U.S. paper route. An expired passport is not automatically disqualifying: the date it was issued, your age at issue, its validity and the required matching identity details matter.
If you live in the United States, use the official instructions for that location. If you are elsewhere, check the applicable overseas route rather than assuming PPTC 054 applies. A Canadian child passport cannot be renewed as an adult passport.

What should I gather before filling the paper form?
Keep your previous passport beside you, ask two eligible references for permission to use their details, and gather your address and occupation history. Keep a separate list of questions to resolve before you sign.
If a form will not open correctly in your browser, the government offers the free PDF with instructions for opening the downloaded file in Adobe Reader on a computer. More history or unusual circumstances may require additional official forms; do not omit information to fit a tool.
Can I take or edit the passport photo at home?
Canadian passport photographs must be taken in person by a commercial photographer. Paper and online applications have different photo deliverables. Ask the photographer for the format required by your chosen route.
A cropped selfie, a home print or an edited background is not a substitute for the Canadian requirements. Wayform’s Canadian renewal flow does not require a photo purchase.
